A hand hewn wood beam (made by hand with an axe or adz) is a more rustic beam than a timber that was rough sawn on a sawmill. We have both styles. Old wood beams are usually a honey brown color when the first come out of a building, they will turn to a gray patina after several weeks or months outside. Knots, cracks, peg holes, mortise pockets, nail holes, worm holes and other character marks add to the rustic wood beam appeal of these old reclaimed barn beams. Most barn beams were crafted square, 6x6, 7x7, 8x8 and so on. An 8x8 inch square timber is perhaps one of the more common sizes used throughout the United States. We have various species, oak, elm, pine, ash, hickory, walnut, maple, chestnut and others as available. Generally, pricing depends on how specific a timber you are seeking. Length, width, species, condition, hand hewn or rough sawn. Quantity is also a factor, we provide truck loads, or just a single timber for a mantle. We ship nationwide.
